Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic cum vascular syndrome of multiple etiologies characterized by chronic hyperglycemia with disturbances of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both.
This disorder is frequently associated with long term damage, which can lead to failure of organs like eyes, kidneys, nerve, heart and blood vessels.
Diabetes is one of the most common health disorders found all over the world.
Today it has affected the entire world irrespective of the life style, age and geographical location.
In general pathophysiology of diabetes is - When your body turns the food you eat into energy (also called sugar or glucose), insulin is released to help transport this energy to the cells.
Insulin acts as a “key.” Its chemical message tells the cell to open and receive glucose. If you produce little or no insulin, or are insulin resistant, too much sugar remains in your blood.
Blood glucose levels are higher than normal for individuals with diabetes.
